Are PCBM students eligible for IISER and IISc?

The term PCBM often creates confusion among students. Unlike PCMB, where Mathematics is a full subject, PCBM makes Biology the main subject and Mathematics an additional one. This difference can impact eligibility.
For IISER, PCBM students are eligible as long as they meet the board percentage criteria. IISER’s flexible approach allows students from both math-heavy and bio-heavy backgrounds to pursue research-driven science. On the other hand, IISc Bengaluru is stricter. Its BS program usually requires Mathematics as a core subject. This puts PCBM students at a disadvantage if they want IISc.
The takeaway is simple. If a student has PCBM and a stronger interest in biology, IISER is the more welcoming and practical option. It keeps open the door for research in biology, chemistry, and interdisciplinary sciences while still offering opportunities to build math skills along the way.
