Can a Student Attempt IAT More Than Once if They Are a Dropper?
IISER ADMISSIONS
When students miss out on IISER admission in their first attempt, the biggest doubt that arises is, Can I appear for IAT again if I take a drop year? The short answer is yes, but with conditions.
The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) allows candidates to apply only if they have passed Class 12 in the current year or the previous year. For example, if you passed in 2024, you can sit for IAT in 2024 and 2025. Beyond that, you are no longer eligible. This makes it clear that IISER does not allow unlimited attempts. It is strictly a two-attempt exam linked directly to the year of your Class 12 completion.
This is different from exams like JEE Main, where students may get multiple attempts in consecutive years. IISER keeps the window short so that the intake remains fresh, and students step directly from school into research-focused learning without long gaps.
For droppers, this means strategic planning is essential. If you did not get your desired IISER campus or rank in your first attempt, you can take a partial or full drop year and try again the next year. But if you miss the second chance, IISER is no longer an option, and you will have to look at alternatives like NEST, CUET science programs, or IIT JAM for master’s level entry later.
It is also worth noting that IISER does not differentiate between first-time takers and droppers in terms of seat allocation. What matters is your score in IAT and your rank in the merit list. In recent years, many droppers have successfully secured seats at IISER Pune, Kolkata, and Bhopal by using their second chance wisely.
So if you are planning a drop, don’t see it as wasted time. Instead, build a solid strategy, focus on NCERT and past IAT papers, and treat your second attempt as your final and best shot.
