How much does it cost to study at IISER? Do all students get scholarships?

IISER ADMISSIONS

For many aspirants and their families, one of the biggest concerns about IISER is the financial side. How much does it cost to study there, and what kind of support is available? Let’s clear the picture step by step.

Stipends at IISER vs NISER

At NISER, students usually get a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 from the government. IISER students, however, do not receive a fixed stipend for everyone. Earlier, students admitted through the KVPY channel used to receive fellowships, but that system is no longer active. At present, IISER students may receive financial support only if they qualify for external scholarships.

Fee Structure at IISER

The average cost of studying at IISER is between ₹1.5 and 2 lakh per year, depending on the campus and hostel facilities. While this is lower than private universities, it can still feel heavy for some families. Fee waivers or need-based support are sometimes available to ease the burden.

Scholarships for IISER Students

Scholarship opportunities do exist. Students with exceptionally high marks in Class 12 (generally 98% or above in CBSE or state boards) may qualify for the INSPIRE scholarship funded by the Government of India. This is an external scheme, not something provided directly by IISER.

International Funding and Research Opportunities

IISER’s strong research collaborations also open doors for funded programs abroad. Students often receive support through projects, fellowships, and exchange programs. Prestigious schemes such as DAAD (Germany) and MITACS (Canada) are commonly accessed by IISER students for research internships.

While IISER does not guarantee stipends for every student, it balances affordable fees with multiple opportunities for scholarships and research-based funding. Those who actively participate in projects and exchanges often find their financial load much lighter. In short, IISER may not offer stipends like NISER, but it does provide pathways to merit-based and project-based support both in India and abroad.
