IAT or NEST - Which is Better for a Career in Science?
IAT PREPARATION
Every year, a lot of students preparing for JEE or NEET also come across two lesser-known but equally powerful options, the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) and the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST). At first glance, both exams look similar. They’re both about science, both after Class 12, and both open doors to research careers. But once you dig a little deeper, you realize there are some big differences.
Understanding IISER through IAT
IISERs (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) are spread across India and admit students mainly through IAT. In 2025, nearly 2 lakh students appeared, and the number keeps rising. The eligibility isn’t too complicated: 60 percent in Class 12 for General/OBC-NCL, and 55 percent for SC/ST/PwD. The paper asks from all four subjects — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. This makes it fair for both PCM and PCB students, though honestly, those without math do find it a bit tougher to compete. IISER offers about 2000 seats, which means more opportunities compared to NEST.
What Makes NEST Different
NEST leads to NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CBS Mumbai. The intake is much smaller, but the big attraction is the guaranteed ₹5,000 monthly stipend funded by the Department of Atomic Energy. The syllabus again covers Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Math, but PCM students can’t skip biology here — even basics are important. Many students say NEST feels slightly more rigorous, maybe because of the smaller intake and higher competition per seat.
IISER or NEST - Which One to Choose?
This really depends on personal goals. If you want more seats, flexibility at the undergraduate level, and a wide research culture, IISER is a great bet. If you’re looking for a smaller, more tightly-knit program with financial support built-in, NEST might be the better choice. Plenty of aspirants actually prepare for both, keeping options open.
So, both can shape a strong research career. What matters most is knowing your strengths like whether you’re stronger in math, biology, or a mix of both and planning accordingly.
