Is coaching necessary for IAT, or can self-study be enough?

IAT PREPARATION

One of the most common dilemmas is whether to join a coaching program for IAT or to rely on self-study. The truth is, both paths can work. It depends on the student.

Coaching offers structure, expert guidance, and peer competition. For students who struggle with consistency or don’t know how to approach the syllabus, coaching can save time. It also provides access to quality study material and mock tests tailored for IAT.

On the other hand, self-study works for disciplined students who are already clear with NCERT concepts. Many IISER aspirants crack IAT by focusing on NCERT, practicing past papers, and regularly attempting mock tests without formal coaching. Online resources, YouTube lectures, and free test series can also replace coaching if used wisely.

The key lies in self-awareness. If you can study daily, stick to a timetable, and honestly evaluate your weak areas, coaching may not be necessary. But if you keep procrastinating or feel lost, joining a batch can give you direction.

Final thought: Coaching is not mandatory. But yes it increases your chances of clearing doubts so it also increases chances of clearing exams. A focused self-study plan with NCERT + practice tests is enough for motivated students. Coaching is simply a support system, not a guarantee.
