Is the INSPIRE Scholarship Automatically Given to Eligible Students?
IISER ADMISSIONS
The INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) scholarship often comes up in conversations around IISER admissions. Many students and families assume that if someone has scored above the cut-off marks in Class 12, the scholarship will be automatically credited once they join IISER. The reality is a little more complex.
INSPIRE is a Government of India scheme run by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It provides a scholarship of ₹80,000 per year to meritorious students who rank among the top 1% in their Class 12 boards or who clear specific competitive exams like JEE Advanced, NEET, or KVPY. While IISER students are eligible to apply, the scholarship is not automatic.
Instead, eligible students must submit an application on the INSPIRE scholarship portal, along with proof of their board performance and admission letter from IISER (or another recognized institution). Once the documents are verified and the application is approved, the scholarship is credited annually to the student’s account.
This means that even if a student has the required percentage or rank, they cannot simply expect the funds to arrive without completing the formal process. In fact, every year, some students miss out on the scholarship because they assume IISER handles it on their behalf. IISER provides guidance, but the responsibility to apply lies with the student.
Another important point is that the INSPIRE scholarship is not restricted to IISER alone. Students joining NISER, IISc, or even central universities with high board performance can apply. However, because IISER students often enter with strong academics, a good proportion of them qualify for it.
In short, INSPIRE is a fantastic opportunity, but it is application-based, not automatic. If you are aiming for IISER and think you might qualify, make sure to track the official dates, keep your documents ready, and apply on time.
