What is the exam language of IAT? Is it available in Hindi as well as English?
IISER ADMISSIONS
Many students preparing for the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) come from state boards or Hindi-medium schools, so the question of exam language is very common. The good news is that IAT is conducted in both Hindi and English. Aspirants can choose their preferred language at the time of the exam.
This bilingual option has been officially confirmed by the IISER admissions portal. The test is computer-based and allows students from different educational backgrounds to attempt it without being at a disadvantage due to language. While the majority of coaching material, books, and mock tests are in English, NCERT textbooks, the main basis of IAT, are available in Hindi as well. This makes preparation manageable for non-English medium students.
On campus and in classrooms, students come from every corner of the country, which naturally brings a mix of languages. In such a setting, English becomes the common medium of communication, especially for academics and official work. Hindi also plays an important role since it is widely understood across regions. However, it’s not practical for any single regional language to dominate, because IISER communities are highly diverse. That’s why the environment usually balances English first, Hindi second, while other local languages continue to thrive informally among smaller groups of friends.
It’s important to note that while IAT offers Hindi and English, other regional languages are not yet part of the exam. Many students and teachers have requested expansion to more languages, similar to NEET and JEE, but as of now the bilingual format remains limited to these two.
For Hindi-medium students, a practical strategy is to study concepts in Hindi from NCERT and then practice solving mock papers in English or Hindi (depending on comfort). This way, the transition feels smoother, and performance depends on scientific understanding rather than language barriers.
With IAT’s growing popularity, over 1.5 lakh students will appear in 2025 and numbers are expected to rise further. The availability of both Hindi and English is a welcome step. It ensures a fair chance for students across India, no matter which medium they studied in.
